Right. So this might sound a little complicated, but via vodex I have discovered Twitter, which is useful if only because someone has set it up so that it pulls real-time information from London Underground, then uses that information to update Twitter, which in turn sends me a text message or IM whenever any relevant tube lines are b0rked.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks and can confirm that it's more accurate than the service the London Underground website itself offers. I've used it to avert morning transport disaster twice.
Better explanation: http://blogs.opml.org/tommorris/2007/02/22#twitterTubeTracker
Also, vodex pointed out that Twitter itself uses RSS feeds, so you don't have to have a Twitter account to use these tube updates.
But I do have a Twitter account of my own, which is YES VERY silly, but which is amusing enough to update in my boreder moments, like when I'm still lying in bed three hours after I've woken up on a Saturday. But yeah, the tube thing is useful. |

I got a twitter last night! I've set it up for my phone number, but haven't got any sms messages from it yet. How do I do that, oh wise one?
Go to Settings, then Phone & IM. From there you can set up your phone number (as you've already done) and IM client, and you can also turn notifications on or off for both. Then, if you go to Notifications you can turn off notifications between certain hours of the day and so on.
Aha! Any chance you'd update yours, just to test if it works for me oh benevolant fruit? ;)
done, with a complaint ;)
Also, I think it updates IMs in preference to texts. I only get texts when I'm not logged in to AIM.
I never use any IM thingies, so it should work... but nothing yet. Hmm. May have to go read 700 FAQs or stomp on my phone.
Strangely enough, the update I sent didn't seem to appear there--that's the first time that has happened. Figures. I'll do another one.
I've still recieved nothing to my phone, despite checking it and updating my details etc. I'll give it 24 hours then get cross and email someone.
I'm glad you are enjoying the Tube tracker, and even gladder that it's helped you avert disaster.
The man himself! Thank you.
hehehe, super. I do like that one.
twitter seems like a stupid idea. So I was obliged to to get an account.
Yeah, well, you haven't felt too obliged to reply instantly to my email, I see. Hmph.
It does seem to be slowly getting more addictive... | |
